VFH Episode #7

In this episode, Teri welcomes Nathan Treloar, co-founder, President and COO of Orbita Inc.

Nathan Treloar is the co-founder of Orbita, one of the first conversation software platforms to enter the voice-first and health care space. He joins me today to talk about the incredible work that he is doing in bringing health care voice experiences to large organizations.

Key points from Nathan Treloar about Orbita!

  • Orbita is a software company, which eventually landed in the voice and conversation assistant space.
  • Nathan had the experience of being a caregiver for an aging loved one; he found this experience challenging and wanted to tackle some of the problems in digital healthcare.
  • The company provides software as a service technology to help health organizations take advantage of the next-generation voice and conversational technologies.
  • It provides an omni-channel service – it supports many different conversational endpoint platforms.
  • In creating the platform, the team wanted to think larger: the service provides enterprise-grade platforms, business logic, it scales well, it is secure, ideal for organizations that want to tap into the value of voice.
  • There are many health templates built in to the service, including assessment surveys, FAQs, care monitoring, and planning.
  • One of the benefits of a smart speaker/device is that it is not a medical device – it is a lifestyle device.
  • Patterns in voice similar are to when the web and mobile first came out.
  • Orbita has deconstruced key technologies and this allows users to pick and choose which components will be part of their voice experience, allowing for a custom experience in a HIPAA compliant way.
  • HIPPA compliance – Nathan expects major providers (i.e Amazon, Google) to come to market with HIPPA compliant smart speaker solutions in the near future.
  • 2018 has been the year of pilots; 2019 will likely be the year of production.
  • Some use-case scenarios of the Orbita platform:
    • Taking existing digital health care content and formatting if for voice. E.g. Mayo Clinic developed a First Aid Alexa Skill.
    • Care coordination around a condition. E.g. PN Medical creates a breathing apparatus to provide lung exercises for people with COPD. This now has a voice health coach component.
    • Connected healthcare management hubs. E.g. Pillo – a device that can also dispense medications.
    • Clinical scenarios. E.g. Voice-powered assistants to access medical records and improve clinical efficiency.
